What's In A Name??

Hello all,

I think this is a good topic to write about since being absent for a LONG time. Not actually that busy, but...there's a lot on my mind this past few weeks (actually a couple of months since the last posting) that the idea of posting anything is being put on the shelf to let it collect some dust...

But now I'm back, and I do have some things to write about especially with regards to the title above. The truth is, I'm expecting a child soon. It's a wonderful event that I think most married couples look forward to, myself included. And the burden of it all of course lies with the mother, i.e. my wonderful wife. I'm not here to detail the aspect of child bearing or the labour of love a mother invests upon the child growing within her womb for I have no practical knowledge of any of it at all. But I would like to share the delights(?) of coming up with a suitable name for your child.

There's no secret when naming a child, people (especially your elders) would offer you some 'voluntary' tips. And they leave with you a the standard tagline too: '...but the decision is still yours to make, we are just offering some advice..'. All well and noted..and then they leave you with the-standard-look-after-giving-the-standard-tagline, which is a look that announces 'if you decide against our advice you shall be shun forever by the family'.

Some would even openly say that your choice of name is too much for the child. In my culture there is this word 'berat' as in the name would be too great for the child to grow up with. Names that bear meanings so great it might be a burden for the child to live up to.

And then there is the standard should-it-be-2-names-or-just-1-single-name game. For example:

1. Ahmad - simple, straight to the point, I like it (my opinion), too common, i.e. boring (others opinion)
2. Salman Danial Al-Farisi - Complex, lengthy (my opinion), Great! (others)
3. Abdul Hitler - plain weird (my opinion), plain weird too (others)
4. Darth Grumpy- can this work?

So, what's in a name actually? Anybody has any suggestions?
